In 1979 at the synod convention, WELS adopted the following position statement regarding abortion:
Resolved,
That we continue to urge our membership to make God's will in this matter known to our followmen whenever the opportunity presents itself; and be it further
Resolved,
That we encourage our membership to express their concern and compassion for distressed pregnant women by supporting the development of alternatives to abortion programs which are consistent with God's Word.
In light of this directive, Christian Life Resources, Inc. was formed. The Life Witness program is an extension of CLR, with a direct link between our national office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a volunteer system working in connection with our WELS/ELS congregations around the country.
Life Witnesses are one or more members of a congregation who work with their pastor to help create an awareness of current life issues and inform others of upcoming pro-life events and programs. These members are encouraged to promote programs in their communities and congregations that support the sanctity of life.
Volunteering as a Life Witness provides an opportunity to reach out to God's people with the precious message that all life is sacred and must be guarded and preserved!
What are some Life Witness activities?
Ideas for Life Witness activities are listed below. Additional activities are available through Clearly Caring, a bi-monthly magazine produced by Christian Life Resources and at: www.ChristianLifeResources.com.
- Distribute Clearly Caring and other Christian Life Resources publications.
- Forward pro-life/pro-family artwork and stories for church bulletin or newsletter use.
- Have pro-life/pro-family prayers on your church prayer calendar.
- Add pro-life/pro-family materials to your church library. Materials may be purchased at www.FamilyTG.com or call 1-800-478-2719.
- Encourage members of your congregation to attend the CLR National Convention. Display convention promotion materials at your church.
- Conduct the Change for Life Program to help support New Beginnings, a Home for Mothers.
- Coordinate a Life Sunday program at your church (materials available on the CLR website).
- Keep members informed about current life and family issues by signing up to receive CLR’s regular email update, LifeWire.
